You’ll Never Win

Okay, the last of my #firstworldrants. For a while.

If someone writes a post about you or flames you in a comment, don’t reply. Don’t add fuel to the fire in an attempt to explain yourself or start an argument.

It’s like playing in a game of women’s hockey. You might win, but at the end of the day you’re not really a winner, are you?

It doesn’t look good.

If you can’t post your response in a witty comment that is no more than two sentences, don’t do it. Write a response on your own blog sure, but don’t be a woman who plays hockey for anything more than fun.

It's a joke! Don't you women know better? I'm not calling you 'losers', I'm calling you 'not quite winners!'

I have female subordinate / acquaintances! I'm not a sexist!

    Nice one champ. Credibility; zero.

Maybe it's a social statement that female sport is less interesting, proven with the less coverage it's given, less crowd attendance they have and less they're paid.

Or maybe it's time everyone lightened up.

Unfortunately it's one of those situations where a woman could make that joke and (kinda) get away with it. Like black people can call themselves niggers, but whitey's get slammed if they do that.

In a post where you encourage others not to fuel the fire, you put your foot in it with the "womens' hockey" backhander.

Fueling the fire is fine. It's why I have a small readership here.

But don't do it in the comments of a post written about you.

The exception is on your own blog.

And it's not like I've been ranting/justifying in paragraphs.

Am a little confused, can you clarify who doesn't have a sense of humour?

    a) The one who makes a joke that falls flat?
    – the said "joke" lacks comedic timing, a punch line, a witty insight, etc
    – is delivered in a manner that doesn't show it's intended as a joke.

    b) The people who point out that it isn't actually funny.

I'm not going to call you sexist, but nor do I think anyone would call you a comedienne, or "funny" in this context.

And yeah – call me old fashioned – but good indepth discussion doesn't occur in two lines or less, and nor am I going to blog about your lack of a funniness on my own website (that would be completely off topic for my readers!)

    @ Luci Temple

I have nothing against good in depth discussion. I'd only have a problem if this post was written about you and you feel the need to justify yourself in more than two sentences.

Zac, you're a funny man, but I would prefer to watch a SL1 womens' game over a La Trobe mens SL4 game any day. Good luck getting into SL3, that may be more bearable!

So, let me get this straight. You're saying that you shouldn't reply to a post about you on a blog because you look like a loser. Also don't post long replies if someone "flames you" or disagrees with you in a comment. But if it's on your own blog it's ok. Or if you are witty and it's within two lines. But if it's more than two lines or is not witty it's not allowed.

A very convoluted set of rules you've made up for the online world.
