She’s A Tweeting Beaut

A week ago, I was followed by @TheBogan on Twitter. After slowly building momentum over the past seven days, his follower count is building and I’ve seen his tweets retweeted a number of times. I’m not sure if it’s because myself and Stan have engaged with him a fair bit, but he seems to be fairly involved with the Australian marketing bloggers.

It only occurred to me this morning, but could this be a cunning marketing campaign for VB?

While I doubt that’s the case, wouldn’t it be incredible if it were so? I love the creativity. I love the brand tie in. I love the audience engagement. I even love that it’s completely non transparent, and Julian agrees sometimes it’s appropriate to break the so called “social media rules”.

It could also be some guy who just wants a creative outlet. It might even be Stan himself. But maybe, just maybe, it’s a genius piece of work by Droga5.

My money is that it is Stan Lee.

If it is not him, it is pretty lame!

I have not really laughed at any of his tweets and think it reminds me of people who go to stand up comedy and the think damn, i could do that it doesn’t look that hard. It is too predictable and not very witty. However you look at something like fake Stephen Conroy and whoever is the brain child behind that is right on the money. Hence the reason so many people follow.

I can bet my bottom dollar that Droga5 is not behind it. Give them a little more credit than that.

I think it just back up my point there is still a massive role for Copywriters in S***** M**** http://adspace-pioneers.blogspot.com/2008/10/there-is-job-for-copywriters-in-social.html

Geez that Cole bloke’s a bit full of himself. Isn’t he?

Stan Lee? Doesn’t he write comics or something?

Droga5? Come off it! Nobay loves a beer, but he’s a bloody Pom.

Fake Stephen Conroy. I trust him more than some bloke from Canberra.

Who’d ever have thought an ordinary bloke with a taste for the amber would end up being discussed by a bunch of marketers?

Not me, that’s for sure. Funny old world!

I don’t know, I find it rather funny and perfect for the Twitter environment. Perhaps not as hilarious a character as Fake Steve Jobs, but for a stereotype, I think it’s played well. If it was Droga5, I’d be the first one to say congratulations.

I must admit that I thought it was Stan too. After all, The Bogan seems to be pretty chummy with the advertising/marketing crowd, and some of the conversations seem very well aimed for specific response.

However, I don’t know that there is such a thing as “social media rules” … so don’t know which ones he’d be breaking 😉

    @ Ben

In a week. If they continue this on forever the brand engagement is perfect, and as a target demographic I love it. Constantly have that VB logo in my sight and now will always be thinking about it.

Once again I have to agree with Ben, how is this genius.

What makes this brand engagement perfect exactly Zac?

Just because you see the VB logo does that make it brand enagement?

Doesn’t it come down to context in which you see it, if I think ever tweet is a little off the mark, then I probably do not have a positive interaction with the brand.

Do we not all laugh at TheBogan, we are not aspiring to be TheBogan hence how would this make me want to drink VB?

Also, how do you define that you are in the target demograhic? Are you talking about you being an iGen? Cause I think that they have missed the mark if they think there is a big uptake of Twitter amongst iGen, hence it would probably be seen as a waste of time. It also does not look like they have got many iGens to follow them?

But I have to agree with Gavin, there are no rules to what is right and wrong in using social media. Hence, there is no reason for Stan Lee and Nick Crowther to stop using The Bogan and The Fake Bogan profiles. It is up to people who they decide to follow on Twitter.

This is hysterical. I love that The Bogan is getting so much attention.

    I reckon it’s a mate of Stan’s.

I’ve directly engaged with that “brand” every day for the last week. I’ve laughed at their comments and they’ve been top of the mind every time I’ve logged into Twitter. We’ve had conversation back and forth, that’s engagement.

I’m the target demographic, not because of age but because I’m a poor beer drinker who can’t afford a choice greater than VB or Draught.

Even if you did look at it from an iGen point of view, I don’t consume traditional media and spend a fuck load of time on Twitter.

    @ anguswhines

Stan’s friends might be too old to use Twitter. ;]

The Australian cricket team is in crisis.

“In a week. If they continue this on forever the brand engagement is perfect”

so in a year they’ll have 3,000 marketing nerds following them …

gotta say zac, for someone so cynical about the wider media world, you’re easily pleased when it comes to executions!

    @ Ben

People don’t have to follow you to engage with them. Social media response is ideal on Twitter. any mention of ‘VB’, ‘Aussie’, ‘Bogan’, ‘Beer’ or anything similar could start a conversation with @TheBogan.

I just typed TheBogan into Twitter search.
A tweet he made this morning was retweeted six times within an hour. That means his inane comments are spreading much further than that bloke from Mindshare realises.
